If it’s your first time, getting a Brazilian or Hollywood wax can be scary. Especially if you’re someone who’s been self-grooming all their life, the idea of getting your first intimate Hollywood or Brazilian wax is probably making you extremely nervous. And it doesn’t help that whoever you ask tells you how painful their first experience was!

While there’s no doubt that the procedure can be painful, there are ways to put your mind and body at ease and get through your first session like a champ! Here are some tips to help you prepare for your first-ever wax session;

Let your hair grow

While this may seem counter-productive, it’s essential to let your hair grow before your first wax. One mistake that many women make is shaving before their first session, as they may be conscious about their pubic hair. Therapists are trained to work with hair in these areas and is not something you should feel conscious about!

It may surprise you that cutting or shaving the hair before your wax actually makes the waxing process more painful than it has to be. Wax can’t pick up hair if it’s too short, and multiple strips or hot wax may be required to do it right as a result. So no matter how uncomfortable you may be, it’s in your best interest to let your hair grow before your first wax session.

Take a shower

One way to prepare yourself for your wax is to be as clean and comfortable as you can be. It’s understandable to be conscious, as it can feel strange when a stranger is waxing sensitive or intimate areas. Freshening up in the shower will not only help you feel cleaner and less conscious, but it will also open up your pores and makes the waxing process less painful. It’s also respectful for your therapist to come into the clinic with a clean body to work with!

Painkillers and Numbing creams

Waxing is painful. Period. Whilst most people tend to take the 15/20 minutes of pain, some do find it too much and prefer to prepare in more extensive ways. If your pain threshold is extremely low, you can take a painkiller an hour before your session to ease the discomfort. Another way to make the waxing process bearable is to use safe numbing creams that will make your skin less sensitive to the pain.
