Calling all men, its time to talk…

about skincare. I know you may not think it’s important, but skincare is just as vital as brushing your teeth or taking a shower and just as we do those simple things every day, we should do the same to incorporate a skincare routine into our everyday regime. You may not know this, but men’s skin tends to be 25% thicker than females and on average contains more collagen (bit unfair). Whilst having more collagen is the key to keeping your skin looking youthful (definitely not jealous), having thicker skin also means you need to use stronger exfoliants and more potent ingredients in order to improve your skincare concerns or enhance the appearance of your skin. And yes, men still need to exfoliate too, especially if you have a beard.

The concept of skincare for some men might not be essential but we want to change that, so we have just the routine for you. It’s simple, effective and has long-lasting results. So, if you want to know how to soothe irritated skin, combat breakouts and smooth fine lines all whilst adding a little glow to your skin, then this is the routine for you. Let’s get started with these three simple steps:

  1. Cleanse

Cleansing the skin is a key step in any routine. We need to remove dirt, excess oils and other impurities that can build up on the skin throughout the day. Men produce more testosterone than women, therefore their skin also produces more sebum. Cleansing can remove this buildup and prevent the excess sebum getting trapped and clogging pores. The whole process doesn’t need to take longer than 30 seconds and should be done in the morning and evening. If you have oily skin, then we recommend a foaming cleanser to help remove excess oil. For dry skin, a hydrating cleanser will be needed to add moisture to the skin. It’s also a good idea to exfoliate at least once a week, as male skin tends to be on the thicker side, it needs a deeper clean to penetrate the skin, removing deep-lying impurities and blockages to prevent breakouts.

  1. Repair

Your skin has to tackle air pollution, UV rays and other chemicals that can dry out and damage our skin. So, it needs to be protected! The best defence against these elements is to use a Vitamin C serum. Vitamin C contains antioxidants, a substance that prevents or minimises damage to our skin cells. Without turning this into a science lesson, it’s vital to add a serum into our routine so we can protect, repair and soothe our skin. This step should come after shaving or trimming your beard, (if you do so). A few drops of a lightweight serum can go a long way.

  1. Moisturise

The final stage is to moisturise your skin. Moisturising restores hydration, keeps your skin looking firm and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also replaces the nutrients that have been lost from cleansing. The moisturiser works along with the serum to lock in moisture and forms a protective barrier around your skin. It prevents dirt and bacteria from clogging the pores and reduces the risk of unwanted breakouts. For all skin types, this should be done in the morning and evening.

If your skin is oily then moisture is still important, but opt for a lightweight moisturiser. SPF should also be added at this stage alongside your moisturiser for added protection against sun damage which can lead to the appearance of skin ageing. If you want to find out more about SPF then check out our article ”Let’s Talk SPF” to find out everything you need to know about sun protection.

Beard care is just as important as skincare. As your hair follicles are thicker, they tend to trap a lot more oil and dirt which can clog your pores and lead to a breakout. So, keep your facial hair clean and hydrated with beard balms, oils, shampoos and conditioners so your skin isn’t suffering. If you prefer more of a clean-shaven look and feel, then make sure you are using a good shaving gel or cream.

So that’s our simple 3-step skincare routine, pretty easy, right? This routine can be done in the morning and evening for the best results. It’s straightforward and won’t take longer than 10 minutes. Good Luck!
