If you’re one of those people who are looking to get the perfect tan without the risks of sunburn, then having a quick sunbed can be the perfect option.

In order to get the perfect all round tan or to prepare our skin before our summer holiday, many of us try and hit the beds before our big trip. Visiting a tanning salon is quick, easy – and in the winter time it can actually be a little treat to go for a quick lie down in a toasty oven that makes you tanned! However, it’s important to be careful with indoor tanning  – don’t over do it, and be careful with the creams you’re using. If you are careful, you can build up a great base tan that gives you the perfect glow.

Here are five indoor tanning tips you need to know for perfect sun-kissed skin;

Identify your skin type

Before you lie down and relax in your tanning bed, ask a trained professional to determine your skin type. As certain skin types tan quicker than others, how long your tanning session can be determined by this. It’s important for people with pale skin or skin that burns easily to be careful with how many minutes they go on for to avoid burning or skin damage. No-one wants to come out like a big red lobster after over-estimating your skin type! Remember if you’re UK based, our skin rarely sees the sun due to the rainy British weather, so don’t expect it to be able to take 10 minutes of pure rays straight away!

Decide what to wear – staying safe

What you decide to wear during your tanning session is entirely up to you. However, there are some protocols you need to follow before you start your session. It’s essential that you remove all jewellery as well as contact lenses or glasses. Even something as small as a bracelet can be the difference between an even or uneven tan. Make sure you use the protective eyewear provided to you as well as cleaning down the sunbed before and after use to make it as hygienic as possible for the next person.

No makeup and perfumes

While seemingly harmless, cosmetics and perfumes contain ingredients that make you sensitive to light. That’s why it’s highly advisable to shower before your tanning session to remove all such substances. If left on, makeup and perfumes can cause burning sensations and potentially uneven tanning.

Moving around

Given the limited space within the tanning bed, especially lay-downs, it can be difficult to move around or expose your whole body to the light. However, a quick pro-tip for an even tan is slightly adjusting your body position to maximise exposure to all parts of your body. I.e. lifting your arm up so it can reach the skin around your armpit! People who stay However, not all body parts need sun exposure so try not to worry too much!

Post-tan care

So, you’ve finally got the perfect tan you’ve wanted. Ideally, you’d want to maximise the length of time your skin stays tanned. Therefore try to stay away from indoor heating and hot water to stop your skin from drying out. Drinking lots of water helps the skin to stay hydrated, glow and with a longer lasting tan!
