Have you looked in the mirror and noticed some dark spots appearing on your face? If so, this is the blog for you! Keep reading to find out what they are, what causes them and how you can get rid of them…
So, let’s start with what they are. Dark spots typically appear as small, dark patches of skin and while they usually aren’t serious, they can cause the skin to look uneven and aged, making many people wish to remove them. They may look a bit like dark freckles and can vary in size, showing on areas of the skin that are often exposed to the sun.
Can I stop them from forming? Yes, the good news is that there are things you can do to prevent further dark spots appearing on your face.
Dark spots are formed due to an overproduction of melanin which can be caused by a number of reasons – one being hormones, which is why it can be common for pregnant women to have dark spots that typically lighten after they have given birth.
Sun
We all know by now that we should be wearing SPF everyday for so many reasons. But doing so also helps to prevent dark spots from forming as the sun has a direct impact on how much melanin we produce. This is also why you may find that you have more dark spots appearing in summer. SPF is a must!
Acne
Acne can also lead to the formation of dark spots. Unfortunately, if you are someone who struggles with acne, dark spots can be a common occurrence. Even after your skin has healed from acne, it can lead to pigmentation issues. This is part of the skin’s natural response to inflammation and damage and is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
In order to prevent this from happening, keeping acne at bay is the way forward – although incredibly tricky. Cleansing your face regularly (twice a day) and keeping all your makeup brushes clean will help to prevent the buildup of bacteria on the skin – an acne prone skin must!
You also need to make sure that you are always taking your makeup off before bed – yes, even if you are really tired! Another tip is to try not to pick any spots as doing so increase the chances of post-inflammatory scarring and pigmentation from appearing.
Dark spots are also sometimes referred to as age spots. This is because these spots are typically seen in adults aged 50 and over, however, they can show on someone on any age, especially if they have been in the sun often without wearing sunscreen.
So now you know how to prevent new spots from forming – but what about the ones already on your skin? Lucky for you, there are treatments which can help to minimise the appearance of these dark spots, giving a much more even and clear complexion. As they tend to appear on the skins surface, having regular chemical peels, Superfacials, or Microneedling treatments can help to remove the top layers of dead skin, revealing new, fresh skin in its path.
Chemical peels
Salicylic acid peels can effectively treat dark spots by loosening dry, scaly skin, making it easier to remove. By exfoliating the top layer, it helps to reduce inflammation, making it ideal for treating dark spots.
Superfacials
The Neo Revive Superfacial works effectively for dark spots by refreshing dull skin, reducing fine lines and improving overall skin texture and appearance. It includes Red Algae, Caffeic Acid and Retinol for anti-aging and skin rejuvenation. It is particularly effective for those focusing on signs of ageing and dark spots in particular.
Microneedling
Microneedling is another treatment which is very effective at reversing hyperpigmentation and sun damage. It stimulates collagen production which gives the skin the ability to repair and restore itself. If you are someone who has also struggled with acne and been left with acne scars, this treatment helps to reduce scarring very effectively.
