Today we are going to be talking about Retinol. AKA, the secret ingredient which makes your skin look younger and clearer!

If you haven’t heard of it by now (although we’re sure you already have), Retinol is a form of vitamin A that can be found over the counter in skin creams and serums, as well as in stronger forms via prescriptions.

It is known for its ability to transform ageing skin. It does so by increasing skin cell turnover and the amount of collagen and elastin produced. This magic ingredient helps to plump the skin and is great at reducing those pesky lines and wrinkles!

Retinol For Acne: Safety, Side Effects, Products

This all sounds great, but how long does it take to start seeing results?

Retinol gets to work straight away, however, it may take several weeks to start seeing a dramatic improvement. Your skin may look worse at first when you start using it, but we promise it will be worth it!

Breakouts and dryness are very common as immediate side effects of using retinol, but this should settle after 2-6 weeks. The best way to avoid these side effects from being too severe is to slowly build up your tolerance to it. You can do this by starting with a low percentage and slowing increasing it. Another way to help decrease any irritation caused by retinol is by applying your moisturiser, then retinol and then another layer of moisturiser. If you’re someone who has very sensitive skin Retinol should always be applied at night. UV rays make the skin much more sensitive when retinol has been applied. And even though you’ve heard it before, we’ll say it again, you MUST be applying sunscreen every single day – yes even if it’s cloudy! This also helps with skin sensitivity after applying retinol.
