Have you ever found yourself wondering why your skin isn’t as even-toned as you would like it to be? Do dark spots seem to crop up randomly on your face, hands, or legs? If so, then you’re not alone. Uneven skin discolouration can be caused by a number of factors including age, sun exposure and genetics. But the good news is that there are ways to reduce the appearance of dark spots and leave your skin looking brighter and more even-toned. Read on to learn more about what causes dark spots and how you can get rid of them!
What Causes Dark Spots?
Dark spots, also known as hyperpigmentation, are patches of skin that contain higher levels of melanin – the pigment that gives our skin its colour. There are several factors that can cause an excess production of melanin. Such as; sun exposure, hormones (especially during pregnancy), genetics, medications containing hormones (such as birth control pills), and certain medical conditions such as Addison’s disease or Cushing’s syndrome.
How Can You Prevent them?
The best way to prevent dark spots from forming is to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. This means wearing sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day (even when it isn’t sunny!), avoiding direct sunlight between 10am and 4pm when UV rays are strongest, and covering up exposed areas with clothing or hats when outdoors. It is also important to avoid picking at any moles or blemishes on your skin in order to prevent further discolouration.
What Treatments Can Reduce them?
Fortunately there are a variety of treatments available that can reduce the appearance of dark spots on your skin. Microdermabrasion is a popular treatment option where gentle exfoliation techniques are combined with suctioning to buff away dead skin cells on the surface layer of your skin. Chemical peels are another, stronger option which help to exfoliate the affected area and reveal brighter, healthier-looking skin beneath.
Dark spots can be an unwelcome addition to our faces but thankfully there are treatments available that will help reduce their appearance over time. While prevention is key to stopping them from forming, these treatments can help to diminish dark spots once they have already formed. Following these tips will help keep your complexion looking bright and even-toned!
