- With the weather changing it means it’s time for our skincare to change too. It may not feel like it but we’ve had a long summer, and Autumn is fast approaching. As the weather is getting colder and the temperature is dropping, our skin isn’t afraid to let us know about it. We have to think about what needs to change within our skincare routine to help protect us against the UK’s unpredictable weather. We want to know how to prevent dry skin and other changes we can face as the season transitions. Don’t stress – all can be solved with our ultimate guide to perfect autumn skin! We want to help you keep your skin healthy and happy as we get ready for chillier days and nights in front of the fire.
The best thing we can do for our skin is to prep and prime it ready for the fluctuating weather conditions and low humidity. Commonly, our skin can feel dull, dry and sensitive because of these conditions. So, how do we defend our skin against our environment? One word – Moisture. If there is one thing you should do for your skin this autumn it includes investing in a quality moisturiser. It may seem obvious but hydration helps protect the skin against harsh weather. We recommend the Obagi Intensive Daily Repair for everyday moisture and rejuvenation. It contains Sodium Hyaluronate which helps retain moisture and condition the skin – perfect to combat those bitter autumn winds.
The skin’s natural barrier can weaken because of the changing weather, causing gaps in the skin which releases water, allowing the skin to become dehydrated and let in irritants which can cause sensitivity. A dry environment can cause itchy and inflammatory sensations resulting in several skin condition flare-ups like eczema, rosacea, psoriasis and many more. So how can we avoid these conditions?
- Swap your light cleanser for something more hydrating and nourishing but ensure it’s fragrance-free.
- Just because it’s not summer anymore doesn’t mean we don’t need sun protection! SPF 30 always, even if there’s no sun!
- Use a richer moisturiser, water-based moisturiser.
- Protect sensitive skin by using products that have calming anti-inflammatory ingredients such as oats and ginger, and include Vitamin C in your skincare routine.
- Treat your skin whilst you sleep by using a hydrating serum or mask. Find one that promotes collagen and elastin building, as they protect the skin, improve firmness, stimulate the skin’s natural healing process and help your skin heal from environmental damage.
- Reduce the temperature in your shower or bath as heat can dry out and even damage your skin. Be sure to moisturise after!
- Don’t forget to use lip balm as our lips tend to be the first to feel the cold. We love nourishing products such as the Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream.
During colder seasons, we tend to be lacking in Vitamin D as we aren’t getting as much sun exposure. Well, that’s the case when you live in the UK…So, as mentioned, adding Vitamin C into your skincare routine can be very beneficial to get the same advantages as we would in Summer. Elements 03 Vitamin C serum can help to brighten the skin, balance out uneven pigmentation and even restore vitality.
Humidity levels and changes in temperature can sometimes upset our skin. So, if the odd blemish pops up, don’t panic. Seasonal breakouts are very common, so try using a product with Salicylic Acid as it can help to unclog pores and remove dirt or excess oil.
We don’t want to forget about our body either, as it needs just as much protection as our face. Although our face does get more exposure to harsh weather conditions we shouldn’t neglect the rest of our skin. Try Keraphine Body Smoothing Lotion – rich in power emollients like Glycolic Acid and Ammonium Lactate, to leave the skin feeling soft, smooth and protected.
