Loose Skin

One of the most common side effects of the ageing process is an increase in skin laxity and loose skin, due to the depleting production of collagen and elastin over time. By the time that we are in our mid to late 20’s, our skin’s natural collagen and elastin production starts to decline.

This is an unavoidable part of ageing, which can range in severity from person to person. Despite this, lifestyle factors such as smoking and excessive sun exposure can cause these two vital skin components to reduce even sooner, leading to a decrease in skin quality and firmness at a younger age.

Loose skin can also become prominent after dramatic weight loss, or after going through major bodily changes such as pregnancy. This is often as a result of weight loss that was very rapid rather than gradual, because the skin has had to quickly shrink and adapt to the body’s new size. If you are on a weight loss journey, it is important to be mindful of the rate in which you are losing weight. It is advised that a healthy rate of weight loss is between 1 to 2 pounds per week, which will give the body and skin enough time to adjust.

Whilst loose skin is completely natural, it may lead to feelings of insecurity, especially when the area of concern is exposed. Common areas of concern include the arms, neck, stomach and legs. It can be a difficult condition to treat, as loose skin is typically quite unresponsive to home care methods such as using targeted skincare products.

There are many firming and tightening creams on the market, however it is recommended to seek professional skin treatments. This is because topical creams will only reach the surface layer of the skin, whereas professional treatments can target the concern from a deeper level to provide the most significant results.

Microneedling is one of our most popular treatments due to its versatility, and it works wonders to firm up and tighten loose skin. This is because microneedling encourages new skin to form, which is richer in collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin are two skin components that are responsible for keeping the skin tight and youthful.

Profhilo is also excellent at rejuvenating the skin and addressing loose skin issues. Profhilo consists of a series of injections into the skin, which contain a high-dose of hyaluronic acid. The hyaluronic acid blends into the skin’s tissues seamlessly and helps to remodel the skin from within, by encouraging the production of collagen and elastin to improve skin laxity.

The radiofrequency process within our 3D Lipo treatment also works well to treat areas of loose skin. This is an entirely non-invasive procedure which uses radiofrequency energy to increase the skin’s collagen production.
