Ever wondered why your skin feels itchy, tight and sore? With the weather getting colder and the air getting dryer, you may have noticed a change in your skin. To make this Winter easier, here’s what you need to know about dry skin:

What is dry skin?

Dry skin is a skin type where there is a lack of lipids (oil). It is a common skin concern which can be uncomfortable and cause a lack in confidence. As the name suggests, dry skin is when the moisture levels in the skin are low and the skin is left feeling tight.

Symptoms of dry skin

  • Flaky or scaly
  • Peeling skin
  • Rough to touch
  • Itchy
  • Tightness
  • Redness
  • Fine lines or cracks in the skin
  • Inflamed skin

The causes of dry skin

There are many causes of this pesky skin concern, and everyone has different skin types, meaning that your skin type may naturally be more dry as opposed to oily.

The weather can also have an impact on your skin. Days when there is low humidity and not much moisture in the air such as in during winter, your skin can dry out easily, especially when in and out of central heating. Dry air during summer can also cause your skin to loose moisture, causing it to be more dry and flaky.

Water also has a massive impact on your skin. Even when you take a shower or bath, the water can effect you! The water in our showers can be ‘hard’ – hard water is full of magnesium and calcium which can leave your skin feeling dry. Also if you have a lack of water consumption through liquids, it will stop the skin being well hydrated, leaving it feeling lifeless and dull.

Age can also cause a change in your skin type, as when you get older your body produces less sebum which can result in the top layers of your skin becoming dryer. This makes it even more important to add hydrating products into your skin regime from an early age.

What to do about it

Since dry skin is a skin type it is unlikely that it will ever go away completely, however, there are ways to treat and prevent dry skin from getting worse.

  • Ensure that you are drinking enough water, 2-3 litres a day and incorporate foods with high water content such as fruit into your diet.
  • Try not to scratch the skin if it is itchy and avoid wearing clothing which could irritate the skin.
  • To avoid damaging the skin further, try not to scrub the skin when showering and try to pat the skin instead of rubbing it when drying using a towel.
  • Avoid using ‘oil free’ products as the skin needs more hydration. Instead, ingredients which may be more helpful for the skin are hyaluronic acid and other humectants, as it helps to retain the moisture within the skin.

Profhilo

If aging may be the cause for your dry skin, then our Profhilo treatment may be better for you as it is extremely effective at rejuvenating dry skin and combating anti-aging at the same time. Aging can cause a decrease in the amount of hyaluronic acid the body produces, which can cause the skin to appear dryer and less tight, plump and supple.

Profhilo works by injecting high concentrations of hyaluronic acid into the treatment area leaving the skin looking soft, supple, tight, hydrated and wrinkle free.
