A Beginner’s Guide to Fake Tan

It may still be winter, but summer is just around the corner! Before we know it, it will be time to get that sun-kissed glow on our skin. However, we don’t always get the time to schedule a trip to the beach. So let’s go through the different ways of getting that golden glow without having to hop on a plane.

Fake Tan: The Options

There are two types of fake tanning options that can leave you with a glow.

Bottle Fake Tan

Firstly, we have our standard bottle fake tan – a popular option that is quick, cheap and easy! Bottle fake tan can be applied using a tanning mitt, applied to the body in circular motions. You can buy a number of brands such as Bondi Sands, St Moritz or Tanologist from your local drug store or some supermarkets. Bottle fake tan can be the easiest way to go shades darker last minute, however, it is quite a high maintenance process, as it can mean applying layers multiple times a week in order to keep your glow topped up. So, if you want a longer lasting tan, perhaps you could try the next option…

Sunbeds

Sunbeds are a quick and easy method of self-tanning – you can be in and out in less than half an hour. Sun-beds use UV Lighting to ensure a small amount of light reaches your body, when you’re lying or standing in a sun bed. The result is an all rounded, even tan. You can start from a small number of minutes and build up in order to increase the depth of your tan.

At Simply Clinics, we provide sunbeds at our Southgate clinic. You can also purchase special sunbed tanning cream that allows you to enhance your tan for the duration of your sunbed experience.

What to do before your first tanning experience?

  • Make sure your skin surface is ready for your tan! To do this, exfoliate your skin at least 24 hours before you go for your sun-ben. Exfoliating the top layer of skin will remove any dead skin cells and leave the fresh layer of skin,  prepped for tanning.
  • Make sure you’ve shaved/waxed at least 24-48 hours beforehand. If your skin isn’t free of hair, there’s a chance of product building up in the hair follicles. Also, if you opt for a hair removal method after tanning, you might end up removing the tan.
  • Don’t apply any lotion or moisturiser. A layer of lotion may stop the rays from reaching the skin efficiently.
  • Wear small underwear in order to keep any tan lines to a complete minimum.
  • Avoid taking a shower immediately after the tanning process, giving the tan time to settle in the skin.
