Want to now how to get rid of stretch marks? Read on…
Stretch marks seem like an inevitable side effect of pregnancy, but did you know that they can also form for other reasons and appear on areas other than the stomach? If you have discovered that you have these marks, you are not alone. It is reported that around 80% of women have them. Despite this, they may leave you searching how to get rid of stretch marks online and looking for every remedy possible to try and diminish them. In this Blog Post, we’re going to be advising you on how to get rid of stretch marks for good!
What are they?
Stretch marks are types of scars which form when the skin stretches and/or shrinks over time. These bodily changes cause the collagen and elastin within our skin to break, leading to decreased skin elasticity. This means that your skin then scars in the form of the stretch mark.
You will be able to see whether you have them, as they appear as lines running across your skin. They often also have a coloured hue, either red, pink, or purple. Despite this, older faded scars may appear white or skin coloured. Most stretch marks will fade over time, however they can still be present for many years after they first appeared. This can lead to people feeling self conscious when their skin is exposed. Stretch marks often also have a different texture, as the skin may feel slightly indented in comparison to the rest of the skin.
These scars can form in many areas, however the most common areas are the stomach, breasts, thighs, arms and buttocks. This is due to these being areas which often go through the most bodily changes. Undoubtedly, one of the most common reasons for these marks appearing is due to pregnancy. Despite this, stretch marks can affect both genders and can also be due to weight gain, weight loss or puberty. Having a pale complexion, a family history of stretch marks and rapid changes in weight can affect the severity of them.
How Can I Fade Stretch Marks?
If you have had stretch marks for a while, there is a high chance that you have tried many creams and lotions which claim to dramatically reduce stretch marks in a matter of weeks. Whilst some of these creams may work for some people, it is completely dependant on the individual. It may take some trial and error to find out what works best for your skin. After all, there’s only so much that topical treatments can do, and using them in conjunction with professional in-clinic skin treatments may be your best defence against stretch marks.
Retinol
Retinol is one of the holy grail ingredients in the skincare world, due to the incredible transformations it provides. Derived from Vitamin A, Retinol works by replenishing the skin and encouraging an increase in production of collagen and elastin. When applied regularly to stretch marks, it can help to encourage new skin production and will help to fade the scarring over time. One of our favourite Retinol products in our skin care clinics is the Obagi Medical 1.0 Retinol Cream. To find out more about this product, check out our skincare guide here.
Microneedling
Microneedling is one of our most popular skin treatments, as it can be used to target a wide range of concerns, including stretch marks. This treatment works by causing multiple tiny punctures in the skin using a medical grade device called the Dermapen. The dermapen device causes tiny channels within the skin using fine, sterile needles. This then tricks the skin into thinking that it is injured and causes it to heal and repair itself. When microneedling is carried out on areas of stretch marks, it causes the new skin that is formed to be rich in collagen and elastin, which can help to fade the appearance of stretch marks over time. We typically recommend having a few sessions of microneedling, spaced at least four weeks apart in order to achieve the best results Watch our latest YouTube video to see microneedling in action on the stomach to target stretch marks!
