Laser treatment works by focusing concentrated light on hair follicles. The follicle absorbs that light and converts it into heat (because the melanin pigments are attracted to it). When that happens, the laser vaporises the hair instantly, and the follicle that produces it along with it, thus removing the strand entirely.
Easy and quick, this method removes your hair permanently (though that’s a fair number of treatments).
However, if you want to reap its full benefits, understand that at least until those hairs are permanently removed; you will need to do a bit of pre & post laser hair removal prep.
Read on to know what’s required!
Pre-Laser Hair Removal
No Razors or Waxing
Laser treatment targets the hair follicle. If there’s no hair present, the treatment will be useless. Stop using any hair removal products at least a month before. This means no waxing, no threading and no plucking. You may use shaving cream or hair removal creams though, since they don’t remove the hair from the root.
Stay Away from Sunlight
For the most effective results, your skin has to be as light as possible. Keep in mind that the pigment in your skin can also convert that light into heat. If your skin is darker than its natural shade, it might cause your skin pigment to catch the light as well, and that could cause burns. If you must go out, use sunscreen or book your treatment during the winter.
On the Day of
Clear the Area
And cleanse your skin as well! The hair on the treated area should be visible, but keeping them long will just cause discomfort for you.
Wear Loose Clothing
You want to be as comfortable as can be. Wear loose clothing that’s gentle on your skin (no scratchy clothing) and do not wear any clothes that could stain or mark you.
Post-Laser Hair Removal
After the treatment, you might see a bit of redness and swelling which could last from a few hours to a few days. Typically, that area will feel like sunburn. Use ice afterwards and apply it at intervals.
You may use makeup. But if your skin is blistering, it’s best to avoid it for the time being.
Also, do not pick on the blisters. If your skin breaks, use aloe vera gel or an antibiotic skin ointment. If you feel any pain or discomfort, take a painkiller but ask your physician first about the best option.
Finally, after your skin has settled, use exfoliating cream or a scrub so there’s no risk of ingrown hair.
