Everyone hates wrinkles, but what most people don’t know is that they don’t always occur due to age. If you haven’t reached the age where you could be referred to as ‘old’ but still have wrinkled skin, we might be able to help you get to the root of the problem.

According to a study, overconsumption of sugar plays its part in making your skin look dull and wrinkled. The same study also suggests that those who suffer from diabetes are at greater risk of early ageing signs. Other reasons include a lack of self-care.  According to the Huffington Post, those who put on sunscreen before stepping out in the sun were 24% less likely to get ageing signs on their skin.

Whatever the reason for wrinkles, anti-ageing solutions are available. You might have heard people suggest anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers interchangeably. Let’s look at the differences between the two.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections

According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, anti-wrinkle injections paralyse facial muscles, preventing them from contracting. Muscular contractions are the reason we get wrinkles. Anti-wrinkle injections temporarily paralyses these muscles by blocking the action of acetylcholine. As a result, the skin stops sagging and looks fuller, tighter, and more relaxed.

Anti-wrinkle injections are directly injected in the area where the wrinkles are.  Doctors normally don’t give local anaesthesia, because the pain or discomfort experienced are very mild. The injection takes about 72 hours to work and the results last for a maximum of 4 months. Several injections are used. The number of injections it takes depends on the extent to which your skin is wrinkled. If your face lines are too heavy, multiple treatments may be needed.

This treatment is minimally invasive and can only be performed in-office by a certified professional. You can’t buy it at your local drugstore and inject it on your own.

Dermal Fillers

While anti-wrinkle injections relaxes wrinkles, dermal fillers literally ‘fill’ them up. Unlike anti-wrinkle injections, these are injected beneath the surface of the skin. This injection contains hyaluronic acid in the form of a gel, which adds volume to the tissues in the skin. Fillers can also be comprised of collagen, calcium hydroxylapatite, or poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). Dermal fillers can be injected at different sites, depending on where the creases are. They’re most commonly administered around the eye, cheeks, and jaw-line.

If you have lines on your face which have shown up as a sign of ageing, fillers will add back the lost volume by restoring collagen and elastin. These two compounds are essential for the skin to maintain its shape and youthfulness. With age, as our body produces less of them, the skin becomes saggy.

The effects of fillers last longer than anti-wrinkle injections. You’ll see your skin retain the effects of dermal filler injections for as long as 18 months. But just like anti-wrinkle injections, fillers aren’t permanent either.

Mild pain, bruising, and discomfort are normal with fillers as well, but all of these go away after a short while.
