When most people think of skincare, they think of simply washing their face and applying a moisturiser.
However, there’s a lot of work involved in taking care of your skin and making it look supple and radiant that goes much further than the basic products you put on your skin.
There is no “one-size-fits-all” skin routine that every person can follow to achieve flawless skin. It can take years to figure out what works for your own skin type and skin concerns.
In saying that, there are still a few key steps that everyone can incorporate into their skincare routine to help build the foundations of great skin.
Skin Cleansing
After a long day at work, your skin will be feeling dull and dirty. To make sure you thoroughly clean out any pollutants on your skin, cleansing your skin properly is key.
Remove all your make up before washing your face. Don’t forget the crevices such as around your nose and the underside of your bottom lip.
Without removing your entire makeup, the cleanser will not be able to do its job well as it won’t be able to penetrate your skin’s layers if there’s makeup residue. If makeup isn’t removed properly these could lead to break-outs, blackheads and clogged pores.
Don’t Overdo It!
While some people do the bare minimum, there are those that may compulsively wash their face a little too much.
Too much of anything is a bad idea, especially when it comes to your skin.
Over-washing your skin could strip away natural oils that are essential to protecting it from external factors during the day. Board-certified dermatologists recommend washing your face twice a day. This is enough to efficiently rid your face of makeup, excessive oil build-up and pollutants.
SPF Saviour
One key way of keeping your skin protected and healthy is by minimising its exposure to the sun. While you are out and about in the sun, you might do a lot more damage to your skin than you realise. SPF is useful in protecting you from harmful UVA and UVB rays. While UVA rays are typically associated with premature ageing skin (wrinkles and fine lines), UVB are what cause sunburns.
Another reason why SPF is so strongly advised by dermatologists is that, in protecting us from these harmful sun rays, it also protects us from carcinogens. SPF can also reduce the appearance of sun damage such as discolouration.
Even if outside it is overcast or cloudy, your skin can still be damaged by the sun’s rays! You can get incredible products to help protect your skin that can even be put in your makeup.
While these are just general skincare tips, to find things that really benefit your skin, it is essential to find out your skin type. The best way you can know for sure is by consulting a skincare clinic.
