We all know that laser hair removal is the ultimate way to get rid of unwanted hair. It is the only method that promises to help you ditch that razors for good… But did you know that it can also be helpful in treating some skin condition to give you silkier, smoother and blemish free skin? Read on to find out more!
What is Chicken Skin?
Chicken skin is the term given to a skin condition called keratosis pilaris. This condition can be identified as the small, red or flesh coloured bumps on the body. The main places that this is most seen, is on the backs of the arms and the legs.
This is a harmless condition, however it is often a big insecurity for many people, especially during the summer months. The condition can make skin look red, blotchy and textured, as well as feeling bumpy to the touch.
It is caused by an excess of keratin build up in the hair follicles, which accumulates over time and forms into these small bumps on the skin’s surface. It is thought to be most prevalent in people who are pregnant or have diabetes, however keratosis pilaris can affect anyone of any age. Some studies suggest that people with dryer skin are more prone to the condition. Make sure that you stay hydrated and moisturise well in the winter if you have a dry skin type!
If you have this condition, it is important that you avoid picking, popping or squeezing these bumps. Unlike acne, the bumps aren’t filled with pus, so cannot be extracted. Doing so will just increase skin irritation and may even lead to permanent scarring.
There are some topical creams on the market that claim to help alleviate the symptoms of keratosis pilaris. Look out for creams which contain ingredients such as “urea”. Or ones that are labelled as being made for eczema prone skin, as these can help to reduce symptoms.
What are Ingrown Hairs?
An ingrown hair is when a strand of hair grows back inwards into the skin. This then can cause a red inflamed bump to form, which can be painful and itchy. This skin responds in this way, as it views the hair as a foreign object entering the body, hence the response of inflammation. Ingrown hairs are a common condition and form as a result of hair removal methods, such as shaving, waxing and tweezing.
Despite this, it is most often said that shaving is the worst method of hair removal for causing ingrown hairs. This is because unlike other methods such as waxing and tweezing, shaving does not remove the hair from the root, but merely trims it down to the surface level of the skin.
Men are also most likely to be affected, especially around the beard area. It can cause either a single blemish or multiple small pustules to form around the area. Sometimes the ingrown hair can also contribute to hyperpigmentation, which can give the skin an uneven tone.
Many ingrown hairs do go away on their own without treatment, however they can lead to further complications such as an infection, permanent scarring and permanent hyperpigmentation, especially if they are a reoccurring issue.
How Can Laser Hair Removal Combat These?
Laser hair removal works by sending a source of energy from a specific wavelength which is directed at the hair follicles. This then causes the follicle to ultimately be destroyed, preventing further hair growth.
Keratosis pilaris and ingrown hairs are similar, as they are both caused by a build up underneath the skin. Due to this, they can look similar in appearance. Both can cause red and/or skin toned bumps on the skin which is often a source of insecurity for some.
Laser hair removal is an effective solution for treating recurring ingrown hairs caused by shaving. It targets hair follicles directly, preventing them from producing hair and causing further issues. While not officially recognised as a treatment for keratosis pilaris, many people have experienced significant improvement. By destroying hair follicles, laser hair removal stops keratin buildup, which can lead to the formation of keratosis pilaris. Although multiple sessions are necessary, patience is key to achieving long-term results and smoother, clearer skin.
