With all the hormonal changes our bodies go through when we become pregnant, it is no surprise that our skin is affected too. Whether it’s adult acne or pigmentation, we have created this guide to help you cope with the unexpected skin changes pregnancy brings. While you are doing everything you can to look after your baby, it’s important to also look after yourself and your skin too.
The two most common skin changes that usually come with pregnancy are pigmentation and hormonal acne. They are caused due to the shift in hormones which increase blood flow, oil secretion and pigment-stimulating hormones.
Let’s start with pigmentation. This appears as patches of discolouration on the skin, usually found on the face. Typically, a few months after childbirth the skin returns to normal, however, some of the very dark patches will unfortunately never go away on their own.
To help reduce the risk of pigmentation, make sure you are using SPF every day as part of your daily skincare routine.
The other type of skin concern which is often developed during pregnancy is hormonal acne. Acne isn’t just for teenagers, but it is also extremely common for pregnant women. In fact, more than half of pregnant people will develop acne at some stage of their pregnancy. It usually starts during the first trimester as this is when your skin is producing higher levels of natural oils. For the lucky few that don’t get acne during the first trimester, it is unlikely they will get it during the remainder of their pregnancy. Managing acne when you are pregnant can be difficult as many over the counter treatments are not suitable.
At Simply Clinics we offer treatments which are safe to have while pregnant and can help to improve your skins’ overall appearance. The top two treatments we recommend to rejuvenate your skin is microneedling and microdermabrasion.
Microneedling
Microneedling is the process of tricking the skin into believing it is injured by making tiny punctures in the epidermis. As the injured skin begins to heal itself, it appears as younger, healthier skin, rich in collagen and elastin.

Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is incredibly effective for helping combat skin concerns such as pigmentation and acne scarring. It works to remove the top layers of dead skin cells, ultimately leaving you with younger, rejuvenated, fresh-looking skin.
