Smooth, hydrated youthful skin? Yes, please! How do we get this? Collagen.

Collagen is perhaps the most abundant protein in our bodies; it’s found in our muscles, bones and the digestive system. It’s probably a name you’ve heard before in magazines and online, as over the last couple of years the industry has placed an importance on collagen production and therefore, we have seen a rise in collagen supplements on the market.

Collagen is responsible for maintaining the elasticity in our skin as well as keeping it looking young and healthy. Ideal collagen levels mean that your skin is not only youthful but also puts your skin in a better position to repair itself quickly when facing outside elements or harmful factors such as cold environments or skin conditions (acne, rosacea, etc).

You might have heard of an industry trend such as collagen teas or juices, and whilst there are ways of consuming foods that promote collagen production, as we grow older our bodies tend to decrease in the overall production of this, and there is little our food consumption can do to help.

Lower collagen levels can encourage the skin to lose its elasticity and can begin to sag or droop.  This is often found in people as they age – but all is not lost! There is something we can do to repair the damage of a lack of collagen.

Microneedling

Microneedling is an increasingly popular treatment and an effective kind of collagen induction therapy. Making tiny punctures to the skin, the body is tricked into thinking it is ‘injured’. Natural growth factors are released, and this injured skin is then able to heal effectively, with the newer skin being rich in proteins like elastin and collagen. From just one session you can see a noticeable difference in your skin’s glow, texture and tone.

We offer this treatment here at Simply Clinics and can be had in addition to other treatments such as microdermabrasion, to maximise results.

Dermal Fillers

Another treatment to consider for enhancing your skin’s youthfulness and repairing the damage from a lack of collagen is dermal fillers. While these are not typically used to boost collagen levels, they can cause a spiking effect. Research suggests that HA (hyaluronic acid) injections may stimulate collagen production which will ultimately leave your skin looking fresher. Moreover, HA keeps our skin looking firm and offers deep-hydration. When your skin is hydrated, it glows from the inside out!

The type of dermal filler that’s used depends on the part of your face that is going to be treated. It is really important for any dermal filler treatment to be carried out by a qualified practitioner, such as a qualified Doctor or extensively trained therapist.

Chemical Peels

Similar to dermal fillers, chemical peels are not primarily used to boost collagen. However, when you exfoliate the top layer of the skin, it does promote the production of collagen as well as elastin.

According to the severity of your treatment, your therapist will prescribe a peel that is suitable for your skin type as they range in depth and strength and it’s important to get it right!

If you’re in London and are looking for collagen treatments, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us here at Simply Clinics to consult with our Doctor or therapists on what would be the treatment best suited to your needs.
