Dermal fillers contain a natural substance called hyaluronic acid. They are used to reduce the appearance of unwanted wrinkles, fade facial lines, induce fuller lips and sculpt facial areas such as cheeks and chin. After having one single treatment, you can see the results instantly, which usually last six to nine months.
Now although Dr Youssef performs this treatment every single day, it’s still important that our clients know the complications that can happen in some cases, even though they are very rare!
Risks and complications
For most of us, we can experience minor complications such as bruising, redness and swelling, which only last several hours or a couple of days. However, there are further complications we must talk about that can occur, such as allergic reactions and occlusions.
One occlusion can occur from an allergic reaction. Some of us can be allergic to hyaluronic acid itself. However, it is more common to be allergic to the anaesthetic used during the procedure. Some symptoms to watch out for in case of an allergic reaction include prolonged swelling and redness, pain, itchiness and anaphylaxis in extreme cases.
Another type of occlusion is vascular occlusion – extremely rare but high risk. Possible symptoms include severe pain, blanching of the skin, mottled skin, blue/black discolouration and skin shedding. This is when the blood vessels are blocked. Blocking an artery or vein will lead the skin to change over time. You must let your aesthetician know before more damage is caused to the tissue.
In extreme cases, blindness can occur. This is more likely to happen if the area treated within the face is between eyebrows and nose, forehead and around the eyes. During the treatment, if the tip of the needle penetrates the blood vessel leading towards the retinal artery, hyaluronic acid can escape the eye’s artery and block the blood flow.
Steps to take if you experience any filler reactions and complications:
In the likelihood that you are experiencing any allergic reactions or complications once your treatment has been completed, please see your qualified aesthetician immediately, and they will advise on the best cure.

Here at Simply Clinics, we offer the following types of dermal filler:
Tear Trough
Treatment to reduce the appearance of dark circles, eye bags and hollowness under the eyes.
Lip Filler
Hyaluronic acid is added to the lips to sculpt the shape, enlarge and add volume to the lips and mouth.
Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty
Surgery-free alternative to a surgical nose job. In most treatments, this filler is placed in the bridge of the nose and can also be added to the tip to create the appearance of a small, button nose.
Cheek Filler
The dermal filler is placed around the cheekbone to add structure and correct uneven facial alignment. Cheek filler can create a more contoured appearance.
Naso-labial Filler
Hyaluronic acid is added between the nose and mouth area where the smile and laugh lines are. Fillers within this area will help fill these lines.
Chin Filler
Non-surgical chin augmentation is where hyaluronic acid is used to sculpt and resize the chin.
Jawline Filler
Dermal fillers are injected into the jawline, offering shape and structure.
