What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is the process of making tiny punctures in the skin in order to ‘trick’ the body into thinking that it is injured.
Injured skin heals very effectively, with the new skin being younger, healthier and rich in collagen and elastin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles.
There are multiple benefits to the microneedling treatment at our London clinics. Microneedling allows us to gently infuse essential skin ingredients through the tiny channels created in the skin. This is called Mesotherapy – it makes the absorption of these products much more effective than applying skin creams topically, where absorption is often very minimal.
At Simply Clinics, we also offer advanced skin needling techniques by combining microneedling with additional add-on treatments to enhance the results further. These include microdermabrasion, chemical peels and radiofrequency. At Simply Clinics, we use the Dermapen® approved DP4 device.
We are now offering Microneedling on the hands as an ‘add-on’ to our service.
FAQ
A.Dermapen uses AOVN technology to puncture the skin using sterile surgical grade needles that smoothly glide over, creating thousands of tiny channels in the skin as it goes. These small channels are perceived as trauma by the skin but are not visible to the naked eye. This triggers the skins’ repair processes and activation of skin cells such as keratinocytes, fibroblasts and growth factors. Following this, the production of new collagen that renews and repairs the skin layer is encouraged. The development of these tiny channels also allows us to deliver specially formulated skin products to help treat your specific skin care concerns.
A.Microneedling is performed in a controlled clinic setting by a trained skincare professional. The procedure begins with the application of a numbing cream to ensure the patient’s comfort. The microneedling device is then gently moved across the targeted area, creating micro-channels in the skin. The depth of the needles is adjusted based on the specific skincare concerns being addressed. Deeper penetration may be employed for treating scars and wrinkles, while a more superficial approach is suitable for overall skin rejuvenation. The procedure usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the treated area.
A.Many clients worry about the pain of having microneedling done. The process can in fact cause mild discomfort. Numbing creams are usually applied to the skin before it begins. Once the procedure starts, the needles can hardly be felt. Every client is different and so you may find certain parts of your face are more sensitive than others.
A.Unlike more aggressive treatments, microneedling is minimally invasive, making it suitable for individuals with varying skin types and tones. The procedure typically requires minimal downtime, with most individuals experiencing mild redness that subsides within a few days. You should also know that there is a chance of some pinpoint bleeding too. In a couple of hours, all the inflammation should come down and within 24 hours, you can get back to your usual skincare routine.
A.Clients who have sensitive skin generally find their skin itchy after a day or two. You may find your skin sensitive to the touch as well. These are all normal after-effects of this therapy. You won’t be in unbearable discomfort, but it’s always good to inform clients of what they can possibly face.
A.A study from 2009 showed that this procedure was a success with 80% of participants. Those involved in the study saw their scars fade away and therefore, rated the treatment as “Excellent”. see study here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2840919/
A.Following treatment, it is crucial to adhere to post-treatment care guidelines. This typically includes avoiding sun exposure, refraining from using harsh skincare products, and applying a recommended post-procedure cream to soothe the skin. While some redness and mild swelling may occur initially, these side effects typically subside within a few days.
A.If you experience blackheads regularly, then microneedling is the perfect solution as it’s known to significantly decrease blackheads. Microneedling can encourage them to disappear for a few weeks (yes!), after which they may re-appear. Depending on the time period of which they return, this may be the opportunity to book in for your next session.
A.By stimulating collagen, microneedling is an excellent anti-ageing beauty treatment that helps smooth out damaged skin and prevents fine lines and wrinkles. As older people tend to produce less collagen, their skin gets looser, which is why this anti-ageing process is particularly beneficial for them. Microneedling stimulates collagen production which, in turn, will tighten and rejuevante your skin, reducing signs of ageing, leaving you looking younger with fresh, toned skin.
A.Uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation are common skincare concerns. Dermapen aids in breaking down pigmented cells and promoting the generation of new, evenly toned skin. This makes it an effective treatment for conditions such as sunspots, melasma, and acne scars.
A.Enlarged pores can be a source of frustration for many individuals. Microneedling helps tighten and refine the skin, leading to a reduction in pore size. This contributes to a smoother complexion and a more refined overall appearance.
A.At its core, microneedling is a collagen induction therapy designed to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. The procedure involves the use of a specialised device equipped with fine, sterile needles that create micro-injuries on the skin’s surface. These controlled injuries trigger the skin’s repair mechanisms, leading to increased collagen and elastin production.Collagen, a structural protein, provides the skin with its firmness and elasticity. Over time, factors such as aging, sun exposure, and environmental stressors contribute to a decline in collagen levels, resulting in fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Microneedling addresses these concerns by promoting collagen synthesis, essentially jumpstarting the skin’s rejuvenation process.
A.We offer multiple add-on options to our Dermapen Microneedling treatment. These include cosmetic treatments like Mandelic Peel, Microdermabrasion, Radiofrequency Skin Tightening or Mesotherapy with Retinol, Bright Light or Anti Oxidant Cocktail.
A.It depends on the condition being treated, however, for most skin concerns you will notice a difference after just one treatment. The benefits are often seen within the first two weeks, however, the treatment stimulates the skin rejuvenation process which continues maturing for several months.
A.Treatment of the face/neck takes 30-45 minutes and sessions are usually spaced four-five weeks apart, depending on the conditions being treated and the health of your skin. Pigmentation can be treated every two weeks.
A.Yes, the collagen and elastin stimulated in this treatment continues to mature for up to two years after your treatment. However, your skin will continue to age with time and therefore it is important that you maintain treatments every 3-6 months to keep the skin healthy.
A.Yes, Dermapen clinical treatments may only be performed by our qualified Dermapen practitioners. It is a very natural process, using your body’s own repair processes to achieve the desired results.
A.Microneedling is invasive as it involves using fine needles to puncture and ‘injure’ the skin. The aim of microneedling is to kick-start the production of collagen which is essential for healthy skin. By tricking the skin into thinking it is injured, the skin triggers its repair process. It is a safe and effective treatment for all skin types and is best for treating acne scarring, stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles Microdermabrasion on the other hand is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses a vacuum and diamond technology to deeply exfoliate the skin. This process helps to stimulate new skin growth. It is best for treating clogged pores, dull skin and blackheads by extracting the layers of dead skin, leaving behind younger, fresher looking skin!
