We all know the main symptoms of Menopause – hot flushes, muscle aches, mood changes, headaches and migraines, but do you know how it shows on your skin? In this blog you will find out how menopause effects your skin and the ways you can help to better manage it.

While menopause typically affects women in their mid-late 50s, this isn’t always the case. Some women will experience it as early as their 30s. And did you know that changes to your skin is one of the first signs of premature menopause?

But why does menopause impact our skin? Well, due to the decline in hormones, your skin produces less sebum, which means it becomes less oily. Even if you are someone who has struggled with oily skin for years, you will find that your skin becomes much drier. Your skin may also feel more sensitive too. Other skin problems that can occur due to menopause include breakouts, itchy skin, redness, wrinkles and general changes in texture and overall appearance.

Unfortunately, we have even more bad news… Due to your skin becoming more sensitive, any existing skin conditions you might have, such as acne, may get worse. After years of struggling with these skin conditions, the last thing you want is for them to worsen, so we’ve listed some helpful tips below on how you can feel better in your skin!

Your skin’s condition can be improved by modifying your lifestyle, such as changing your diet and drinking more water. You can also help to control other symptoms like itchy skin by adjusting some lifestyle factors, like less alcohol consumption. Other general tips to help with your skin are to eat a diet high in fish, nuts, and seeds. To keep blood circulating with oxygen, keeping a regular sleeping schedule with frequent exercise will be beneficial too.

There are 3 main skin concerns associated with menopause; dryness, sensitivity and sagging.

Let’s start with dryness. Our top tips for helping dry skin are:

  • Stay away from long, hot showers
  • Apply moisturiser on a regular basis
  • Use sunscreen daily to protect your skin
  • Keep away from abrasive soaps and detergents
  • Avoid using ‘oil free’ products

We also recommend these treatments for dry skin – Superfacials and Profhilo. Our GeneO+ Superfacial treatment can be tailored to your dry skin concern and leave you with plumped and hydrated skin through the use of some essential revitalising nutrients. Profhilo additionally provides the skin with a high dosage of Hyaluronic acid which is great for rejuvenating and hydrating the skin! Hydrated skin = smooth, supple and wrinkle free skin!

The second common skin concern associated with menopause is sensitivity. The best way to help soothe sensitive skin if it has become irritated and red, is to use anti-inflammatory substances such as aloe vera, chamomile and calendula. Avoid using any scented skincare, as these contain unnecessary chemicals which will just further irritate the skin.

Lastly, sagging skin. Eventually, all of us will have sagging skin, no matter what our skin type is. It’s a completely normal part of getting older that everyone has to live with. Effective methods to prevent early sagging are through vitamin A and sun protection. Other procedures which are effective for sagging skin are microneedling and Profhilo. Profhilo is a great treatment for skin tightening as it encourages the production of elastin and collagen which makes the skin look tighter. Microneedling also helps to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin by ‘tricking’ the skin into thinking it’s injured, triggering its repair process. Both treatments are essential for rejuvenating loose or ageing skin.
