Rosacea is a skin concern that is often misunderstood and isn’t talked about as much as other skin concerns in the skin care world. Sure, people always harp on about their ‘redness’ and discolouration, but unless you have Rosacea yourself, you do not know how much of an impact this condition can have on your skin confidence. In this Blog Post, we will be sharing with you some of the signs of Rosacea, as well as what treatments and products can help to manage the condition…

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition, which is characterised by blotches of red skin, as the name suggests. It is a very common skin concern, that is typically most prevalent in those aged 30+. As Rosacea is a condition that can develop over time, it is important to be aware of it so that you can recognise the signs and be able to treat your skin accordingly.

It is typically most concentrated across the centre of the face, such as around the cheeks and nose. This gives that ‘flushed’ appearance which is often associated with Rosacea.

There are some theories that things such as spicy food, exercise and the sun can trigger Rosacea, however there is no official evidence to suggest this. If you have Rosacea, it may be worthwhile keeping a food and activity diary, so that you can pinpoint if there is anything that triggers a flare up for you.

Signs That You May Have Rosacea

Redness

The redness is typically found mainly across centre of the face, however this can fluctuate depending on the individual. The redness can also range from mild to severe, with it becoming less visible at certain times and flaring up again later.

Red Bumps

Within the redness, there are usually small, red, pus- filled bumps. These bumps can often be mistaken for acne and can disappear and reappear frequently over time. Within the redness and bumps, there may also be a few extremely dry patches of skin, which can feel tight and itchy.

Visible Blood Vessels

If you look closely, you may also be able to see that the blood vessels within the skin are more noticeable. This can include broken capillaries, also known as “threadveins”, which essentially are tiny blood vessels which have become dilated.

Increased Sensitivity

You may find that your skin is extremely sensitive, especially when applying certain skincare products. Upon application, you  may find that your skin really cannot tolerate anything new, especially products with lots of fragrance. You may also feel a burning or stinging feeling upon application of certain products.

Ways To Combat Rosacea

Gentle Home Skincare Routine

If you are struggling with Rosacea, it is important to take a look at your home skincare routine to see if there are any improvements that you can make.

It is advisable to use products that are labelled as “hypoallergenic” and “fragrance free”. This will ensure that they have been tested on sensitive skin types and are not known to cause a reaction. Heavily fragranced skincare is often one of the main culprits for flare ups in skin reactions and sensitives.

At Simply Clinics, we highly recommend the products from the Dermatologist curated ranges, OBAGI and ZO Skin Health. Many of the products within these ranges are hypo-allergenic, fragrance free and are suitable for use on sensitive skin types.

If you are looking for a calming moisturiser, the Obagi Hydrate may be just up your alley.

Thermavein

Thermavein is an incredible treatment that diminishes the appearance of threadveins, which many Rosacea sufferers experience.

The thermavein device gets to work by delivering a controlled electrical current over the vein. This causes the threadvein walls to collapse and stick together. After the treatment, the threadvein is broken down by the body over a period of 4-6 weeks and is diminished from the skin.
