What is this new thread lifting treatment? Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve most likely seen images and videos of the PDO thread lifting procedure all over your feed. Promising to give you a snatched, lifted and sculpted look without the need for dermal fillers, PDO threads is a treatment that is on everyone’s minds… But is it too good to be true? Read on to find out our opinion on the new trend.
PDO Threads Explained
A PDO Threadlift is one of the newest treatments around in the aesthetics world. The procedure works by causing an instant skin lifting effect. The treatment consists of thin PDO threads being inserted into the skin. Either a blunt-tipped cannula or a regular needle will be used to insert the threads. The thread is positioned into the desired place, tightened to lift the skin and then the excess thread is cut off.
This can help to tighten and firm skin by pulling it back and to promote collagen and elastin production within the skin, leading to fewer fine lines and wrinkles and improved skin texture.
The threads themselves are composed of polydioxanone (PDO), which is a medical grade thread. The threads are made up of proteins and are thinner than a strand of hair. There are different types and shapes of threads which are used to provide different results.
After the threads have been inserted, it causes a healing response within the skin. This is because the threads leave ‘micro-injuries’ within the skin’s tissues, causing it to repair and heal itself with new tissue, which contain more collagen and elastin.
After a few months, the PDO threads will be dissolved into the skin’s tissues and the new collagen and elastin will be left in their place, leading to tighter, more youthful and supple skin.
Fox Eye Procedure
The most common PDO thread technique is the fox eye procedure. Everyone wants that snatched and lifted look, which the fox eye procedure claims to deliver. Supermodel Bella Hadid has reportedly undergone this treatment to achieve her lifted brow look. This has lead to the treatment’s increasing popularity, particularly in the USA.
Many people opt for this treatment as they feel as though their brows are too heavy. They may also have hooded eyelids or have some asymmetry that they wish to correct.
In this treatment, the threads are inserted near the tail end of the brow to lift it up. This treatment acts as an alternative to a non-surgical brow lift and promises to lift the eyebrows to give a more awake and refreshed eye look.
The Risks
Many people have PDO threads as a non-surgical alternative to a brow lift, however that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any risks involved. As with any aesthetic procedure, there are risks of bruising and swelling.
One thing to be aware of, is that the before and after images shown of the fox eye procedures are taken immediately after the threads are inserted. This is why the skin looks instantly lifted and firmer. It has been said that the results often do not last as long as they claim to (18 months), as after the threads are dissolved, some practitioner state that the lifting effect reverses itself and the skin returns to normal.
Due to the nature of the procedure, there is also a risk of a foreign obejct rejection response from the body. This can be very dangerous and lead to other complications such as infections within the skin.
The treatment also creates a high risk of long-term scar tissue. This is due to the fact that a foreign item is being placed tightly into the skin and lifted out of place. There are many images online of people who have suffered long-term scarring and tissue damage post thread lift treatment.
Due to the risks mentioned above, this is not a treatment that we offer at our Doctor lead skin clinics. Despite this, there is an alternative treatment that we offer that can help to lift and awaken your eyes…
The Alternative to PDO Threads
At our skin clinics, we offer a non-surgical brow lift with anti-wrinkle injections. Using anti-wrinkle injections, we are able to carefully sculpt your brow to lift upwards and give you that wide eye look.
The anti-wrinkle injections are injected into the forehead muscles around the brow to slightly manipulate the muscle movement which gives them a lifted appearance.
Whilst the results of this treatment are much more natural in comparison to the fox eye trend, there are minimal risks associated with it, and it is a much more sustainable treatment. Prices for our anti-wrinkle injections start from £120, so it is also much more affordable!
All of our aesthetic procedures are carried out by our lead Doctor, Doctor Youssef Haffar. Doctor Youssef has over eight years of injecting experience and has a strong aesthetic eye.
