What to do if lip filler goes wrong. Yes, it can happen unfortunately! Overfilled, duck lips? Not for us thanks! Lip filler is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the UK, but what happens if it goes wrong? In this blog we will show you how you can gain back your confidence if you’ve had poorly filled lip filler.

If you’ve made the decision to get lip filler, then you want the result to be gorgeous, luscious lips, which is why when it is done badly it can leave you feeling worse and less confident than before you had it done. But don’t worry – you don’t have to live with lips that are getting you down. Botched lip filler can be fixed, leaving you with the hydrated, plumped lips you were after!

Filler Migration 101 - Simply Clinics

There are some side effects to getting filler which are completely normal. These include:

  • Bruising
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Discomfort
  • Small bumps and lumps (temporary)

Make note that these symptoms shouldn’t last any longer than 5 days and for the majority of people, when done correctly lips will only be slightly swollen for a couple of days post treatment. Some people are even lucky enough to not have any bruising and very little swelling!

What to look out for which suggests your filler wasn’t done correctly:

If you have recently had lip filler and are noticing lumps and bumps, a dark looking moustache above your lips or your lips look like oversized ‘duck’ lips, then your filler may have been injected into the wrong area. Migrated lip filler tends to happen over a longer period of time, and we often find people mistaking migration for just poorly filled lips.

Lip filler should not go outside of the vermillion border. This is the line located just above the red part of the lip. If your lips look unnaturally puffy, then they have most likely been overfilled.

Fixing migrated filler

The good news is, lip filler is reversible. Therefore, to get the filler back in its right place (within the vermillion border), the filler needs to be dissolved and then refilled. This is the only way that migrated lip filler can be fixed. To do this, a product called Hyalase is used to break down the filler, leaving a clean slate to work with.

This lovely client came to us with poorly filled lips from another practitioner. The filler she had received made her lips look puffy and unnatural. We helped fix her lips by firstly dissolving the filler that was there, then refilling her lips in the correct place to give them a better shape and more natural looking appearance. At Simply Clinics we believe when it comes to lip filler, less is more and that you don’t need to have huge duck lips to make your lips look better.

Minimising filler risks

With any injectable procedure there are going to be risks, however, there are ways they can be minimised. Our number one tip for ensuring your lip filler won’t migrate, is to go to a fully qualified doctor to get any injectable procedure done. This will help minimise any risks of filler being performed incorrectly. It’s easy for anyone to become an injector, but it doesn’t always mean that they have had the extensive training a doctor will have had.

At Simply Clinics all of our aesthetic procedures are performed by our two doctors, Dr Youssef and Dr Harry. Dr Youssef has over 9 years experience injecting. Not only do they both have experience injecting, but from being a doctor they have gained a better understanding about facial anatomy and the vascular system. This helps to ensure there is minimal risk of any complications during the procedure. As experienced doctors, they will be able to offer more precision and accuracy from their extensive training and experience.
