One of the most asked questions when getting lip filler is how long will it last, and how I can I make it last longer? In order for your lip filler to last, it is important that you follow the correct aftercare. We are going to talk you through the best things you can do to help maintain your lip filler, for long lasting results.
It’s important to point out that not everybody’s filler will last the same amount of time. Results vary from person to person, however, when the aftercare is followed correctly clients usually find their filler lasts between 6-12 months.
Lasting filler tip #1: Follow the aftercare!
We cannot stress how important it is to be following the aftercare – it’s there for a reason! While fillers are a treatment with very little downtime, it can be tempting to carry on with your usual daily actives. However, in order to make your fillers last and also to help reduce any additional swelling the following advice must be stuck to:
- Applying ice if your lips are swollen (it is normal for your lips to swell after your lip filler treatment, with swelling typically lasting from a couple of hours to a few days)
- Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water
- Avoid strenuous exercise for the first 24-48 hours post treatment
- Avoid sun exposure, saunas and sun-beds or anything else that increases the blood circulation in the area for two days
- Don’t take any blood-thinning medications, including aspirin and ibuprofen
- Avoid smoking
Lasting filler tip #2: Don’t forget to wear SPF on your lips!
You should already be wearing SPF every single day, no matter what the weather is like outside (yes, even if it’s a cloudy, rainy day). Your body will naturally dissolve your lip filler and UV rays can cause some types of filler to break down more quickly, speeding up the process. Therefore, to ensure the sun isn’t making your filler disappear, it’s important to keep out of the sun when it’s at its hottest (11am-3pm) and making sure you are applying SPF to your face AND your lips.
Lasting filler tip #3: Keeping a healthy diet!
Eating healthily has so many benefits for your body. One being, helping to make your lip filler last longer! Foods high in saturated fats and sugar can cause inflammation in the body – this can cause filler to be broken down much faster. While everyone loves a treat now and again, sticking to a balanced, healthy diet will help to make your lips last longer.
Lasting filler tip #4: Minimising stress!
Stress is never good for our bodies, and this is even more important when we have filler. When you become stressed your body produces extra hormones. These hormones can actually cause filler to break down more quickly. While it isn’t easy to have a completely stress-free life, finding ways to help manage your stress can help maintain your filler.
Lasting filler tip #5: Top-up appointments!
This is the best and most effective tip for ensuring the size of your lips stay the same after you’ve had filler. If you wait until your filler has fully dissolved for your next filler appointment, they will have returned back to their original shape and size. This will make it more noticeable when you go to get them filled again. To give the impression that your filler has lasted longer, seeing your injector for regular top-up appointments will help prolong the effects of filler, keeping your lips looking great for longer!
